Western Medicine CHLORAMPHENICOL CAPSULES 250MG B.P. (Use of drugs
for bacterial infections)
Each capsule contains 250mg chloramphenicol.
Chloramphenicol is a broad spectrum antibiotic effective aganist a
wide range of Gram-negative and Gram-positive
bacterial, rickettsias, and chlamydias. It acts by interfering with
bacterial protein synthesis and is mainly bacteriostatic.
Chloramphenicol is active when given orally and diffuses into the
cerebrosp inal fluid even when the meninges are not inflamed. The
majority of a dose is inactivated in the liver, only a small
proportion appearing unchanged in the urine.
Typhoid fever and other types of systemic salmonella infections.
The carrier state will not be eliminated.'Bacetial mening it is due
to Haemophilus influenzae.
Anaerobic infections such as epidemic, murine, scrub and recrudescent
typhus. Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Q.fever when tetracylines
are not indicated.
Brucellosis when tetracylines are contra-indicated.
The use of chloramphenicaol should be limited to serious infections
where positive bacteriological evidence adn clinical judgement
indicates that chloramphenicaol is an appropritate antibiotic.

Chloramphenicaol is contra-indicated in the following conditions:
patients with a history of hypersensitivity or toxic reactions.
for minor infections or for prophylaxis.
during active immusnisation.
The risk of aplastic anaemia does not restrict the use of
chloramphenicol in situations in which it is necessary;however,it
emphasizes that the drug should never be employed in disease
readily, safely and eddectively treatable with other abntimicrobial
agents or in undefined cases.

Repeated courses and peolonged treatment should be avoided.
Concomitant administration of chloramphenicol wit other drugs
liable to depress bone-marrow function should be avoided.

[Medication for pregnant and lactating women]
Because chloramphenicol can through the placental barrier, in
preterm and full-term newborns are likely to cause toxic reactions,
"gray baby syndrome", so during pregnancy, especially late
pregnancy or childbirth period should not use this product. This
product from the secretion of milk, there are adverse reactions
caused by breast-feeding babies may include severe bone marrow
suppression reaction, so this product should not be used for
lactating women, must be suspended when breast-feeding.
[Medication for children]
The newborn because the liver enzyme system is not mature, the
excretory function of the kidney and renal excretion of drug from
the poor, than adults so slow, easily lead to chloramphenicol
application in the newborn blood concentration and high toxicity
(gray baby syndrome), the newborns should not use this product,
there are indications to use this product should be used in
monitoring blood concentration conditions.
[Medication in the elderly]
Most elderly patients with organ tissue degradation, dysfunction,
immune function is reduced, can cause serious adverse reactions of
chloramphenicol in elderly patients, so it should be used with
